ESR Cartography have been in the business of providing paper maps for specialised applications for many years. Formally based in Byfleet, Surrey, they are now in Maidenhead - for contact details, see below.
ESR were among the first suppliers of mapping used with GPSS, and the UK '100 Mile' maps were first produced and delivered in July 1995. At that time little other good quality, low cost mapping was available for GPS tracking use. The 'right product at the right time' meant that ESR mapping was selected for use with GPSS in a UK Inmarsat-C tracking application, for a Police Constabulary - despite the fact that the original requirements were for Ordnance Survey mapping. At that time, Ordnance Survey copyright mapping was too expensive for some applications, and certainly for those where the project was being procurred through competition - where price matters. Pictures from this project are below, illustrating the '100 mile' mapping from ESR.
Good quality, detailed mapping is now a consumer product, with more detailed UK mapping available from this web site, and street level maps for all UK available on a CDROM from Microsoft - suitable for use with GPSS - at a few pounds.
Despite this, the '100 mile' ESR maps provide a useful scale, for those who want to zoom out and 'see the big picture'. They provide an attractive alternative to the '99 mile' maps available from this web site, for free use with GPSS. In the early years, the majority of these '100 mile' maps were offered as a purchased option for GPSS, at 50 GBP for 1/3 of UK. Now they are available free, as a download from this web site, for those using GPSS. Any other use will require permission from Sunninghill Systems and ESR Cartography limited, who jointly own the copyright of these files. The copyright on the original paper maps is held entirely by ESR Cartography, and you may wish to contact them, according to your mapping requirements: they obviously have a much wider selection of mapping and mapping services than the paper map used for these '100 mile' maps.
